Bharatanatyam, a pre-eminent Indian classical dance form was conventionally a solo dance performed only by women. It was initiated in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and eventually flourished in South India.
The name Bharatanatyam has been derived from four words - Bhava meaning emotion, Raaga meaning music or melody, Taala meaning rhythm and Natyam meaning dance. Thus, Bharatanatyam is the dance that encompasses music, rhythm and expressional dance or Abhinaya and strictly adheres to the Natyashastra (the scripture of classical Indian dance)
Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas are emoted by dancer with excellent footwork and impressive gestures. It also continues to inspire several art forms including paintings and sculptures.
