Ameera Nimjee (UChicago PhD Candidate and Lecturer in the Department of Music, University of Chicago) and Rumya S. Putcha (UChicago Alum and Assistant Professor in the Department of Performance Studies, Texas A&M University), will present a lecturedemonstration on the politics of performing Indian dance transnationally. Ameera and Rumya began their training in kathak and kuchipudi in Toronto and Houston respectively, both homes to large communities for Indian dance in the diaspora. They represent and package Indian dance in North America while also negotiating the form as perceived pardesis in India. Their research explores how musicians, dancers, and other actors navigate "movement" in dance--through global and regional travel, patronage, and choreography between India and its diaspora. In this lecture performance Ameera and Rumya will demonstrate how they travel between issues of transnationalism, race, and citizenship in their collaborative research and as practitioners of Indian dance.
